HC drops contempt proceedings against BMC

Civic body assures court it has complied with order, removed engine and shed

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday agreed to drop the contempt proceedings against the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) after the civic body said it had complied with the court’s order and removed a fire engine stationed in Priyadarshini Park since June.

The BMC’s counsel, A.S. Sakhre, told the court that the civic body had also removed the temporary shed constructed in the park on Nepean Sea Road to house the fire engine.

A Bench of Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice M.S. Sonak accepted the BMC’s submissions and agreed to drop the contempt proceedings against the corporation.

The court was hearing a plea filed by the Malabar Hill Citizens Forum against the BMC’s decision to station the fire engine and build the shed in the park.

In the last hearing, Ms. Chellur had warned the BMC that if it did not comply with the order, it would be held in contempt and its officials would risk imprisonment.
